Deadly California car accident kills 3, sends 1 to the hospital

A man who was allegedly driving under the influence is behind bars after he killed three California women and put another in the hospital. After reportedly striking more than one vehicle, the driver did not suffer any injuries and is in police custody. He is facing felony charges in relation to the car accident.

The tragedy began when the driver of a minivan purportedly blew through a stop sign and made a wide turn. In doing so he struck another vehicle. Instead of stopping and waiting for the police to arrive, reports indicate that the man continued driving. As the van headed north, the driver veered out of his lane and crossed the center line of traffic.

Police report that a southbound vehicle made an attempt to dodge the oncoming vehicle, but the driver was unable to avoid the head-on collision. The vehicle that was struck was carrying four people, all of whom were related. Three of the women died at the scene, and the driver was taken to a nearby hospital and is listed in critical condition. Luckily, police report that the fifth victim in the wreck did not suffer any injuries.

Sadly, the three California women who lost their lives are a grim example of just how deadly driving under the influence can be. Financial burdens that surface as the result of a deadly car accident can weigh heavily on the victim's family. In the case of a car accident that results in death, the family of the deceased may file a wrongful death claim against the driver who initially caused the accident. If successfully litigated, a civil lawsuit can help to ease some of those burdens and may provide a sense of relief to the victim's family.
