Car accident kills 1 woman, shuts down highway

A California highway was shut down for several hours following the death of a local driver. What initially began as a single-vehicle wreck resulted in tragedy when a possible drunk driver caused a secondary accident that contributed to the extensive back-up on the highway. Police ultimately arrested the driver who caused the second car accident on drunk driving charges.

The first accident only involved one car. Although authorities do not believe that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or any other substance at the time, it is not entirely clear why she lost control of her vehicle and collided with the highway divider. Afterward, her car spun around and stopped in one of the lanes of traffic.

It is believed that she was likely trying to exit her car when another vehicle slammed into her. She was killed in the second collision. The driver of the vehicle who caused that second accident was injured, and she and all three of the passengers in that vehicle had to be transported to the hospital for treatment. Upon that driver's discharge, she was arrested by California police.

The effects of alcohol on response time are well understood, which is one of the many reasons driving while under its influence is so incredibly dangerous. Drivers who are under the influence while behind the wheel typically do not have the ability to respond in a timely manner to items in their path, such as pedestrians or stalled vehicles. When this lack of response time contributes to a fatal car accident, the victim's surviving family members typically play an instrumental role in seeking legal recourse in a wrongful death suit.
