Elderly driver causes fatal car accident inside of gym

Tragedy struck a California-area gym when, according to police, an elderly driver could no longer remember which pedal was used to accelerate and which pedal was for braking. This confusion resulted in a terrible car accident that caused multiple injuries and one fatality. Although the driver has not yet been charged with any criminal offense, the possibility has not been ruled out pending the further investigation.

Authorities say that the driver of the vehicle that caused the wreck was 80 years old and resident of the area. While attempting to park her vehicle, she apparently became confused about each pedal's purpose, and she used the accelerator rather than the brake. The driver consequently crashed through the front of the gym and proceeded to drive through part of its interior before finally coming to a rest.

In total, five people inside of the gym suffered minor injuries, and the driver herself did not appear to be hurt. However, the CFO of Lawrence Livermore Lab had been attending a workout class at the time, and she did not fare as well as the others. The 49-year-old suffered fatal injuries and apparently died while still at the scene of the accident.

One of the responsibilities of holding a drivers' license and the privileges it affords is to operate motor vehicles as safely as possible. When for whatever reason an individual is no longer able to do this, he or she can pose a serious risk to other drivers on the road. When a car accident results in the death of another person, it can be frustrating for the family if no criminal charges are filed. However, California families are not without options, and they can still pursue justice and compensation on behalf of their loved one's estate through the successful navigation of a wrongful death claim filed against a negligent or liable driver. These types of civil claims are often an appropriate choice for victims and their families who are struggling to deal with the damages related to a wreck.
