Fiery car accident blamed on possible drunk driver

California drivers typically understand how important it is to follow the rules of the road. Using seat belts, adhering to the speed limit and staying aware of surroundings are all safety techniques commonly used by drivers who want to make it to their second destination in one piece. Sadly, all it takes is one negligent driver to cause a devastating car accident.

A vehicle was apparently stopped at an area traffic light when it was struck from behind and thrust into the intersection. The force of the impact was so great that the vehicle burst into flames, killing one of its occupants and seriously injuring another. A third vehicle was sideswiped as a result of the initial wreck, injuring the driver and sending him or her to the hospital.

The driver who caused the wreck apparently did not suffer any injuries and was quickly taken into police custody. According to reports, her behavior indicated that she was possibly under the influence at the time, and she is facing allegations of committing gross vehicular manslaughter. She may also face charges for driving on a suspended license, as she lost her driving privileges following a 2012 court date for which she failed to appear.

Criminal charges filed against reckless drivers can help remove dangerous individuals from the road, but this is not always enough for the victims of a serious car accident. Serious injuries often leave victims in California unable to return to work during the recovery process, and they are forced to carry the burden of medical bills and daily expenses without a regular paycheck. Although the situation can feel dire, civil claims are an extremely effective course of action for recovering compensation related to a wreck. Filed as either a personal injury or wrongful death claim, depending on the situation, these suits can hold negligent drivers financially responsible for the damages they cause.
