California man seriously injured in fiery car accident

A fiery collision on a California Highway left one man dead and another seriously injured. Police suspect that a third vehicle might have also been involved in the car accident, but have yet to say more regarding the matter other than that they are still investigating. No criminal charges have been filed, as the driver believed to be responsible for the wreck was killed.

A 68-year-old man was behind the wheel of an SUV on Highway 44 when he seemingly lost control of his vehicle. He turned his vehicle left and veered across the center yellow line, putting himself in the way of oncoming traffic. A 31-year-old man driving a pickup truck was apparently unable to avoid the wrong-way SUV, and the two collided.

After being hit, the pickup truck overturned and caught fire. Witnesses to the wreck managed to pull the pickup's driver out of the vehicle before emergency responders arrived. His injuries included several different fractures and he was taken to an area hospital. While the SUV neither rolled nor caught fire, the driver was trapped inside of his vehicle until he was freed by emergency crews. He ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Victims who have been injured in a car accident often turn to personal injury claims in order to achieve compensation from negligent drivers. When the responsible party does not survive the wreck, some California victims feel understandably confused about their remaining legal options. In general, personal injury and even wrongful death claims can still proceed, with the claim to recourse being made against the deceased's estate.
